Pezhham Akhavass is a percussionist/ multi instrumentalist/ music director, master of Tombak (a type of goblet drum from Persia) and Daf (the frame drum). Pezhham was born in 1980 and graduated with bachelor’s degree in music from Sureh University of Tehran in 2005. With the support of his renowned artist father Mostafa, Pezhham began studying the Tombak at the age of five with the guidance of Ostad Naser Farhanghfar. From 1989-1991, he continued studying Tombak with Mr. Saeid Roudbary. Pezhham developed a very unique ability to grasp the technicalities of the tombak and bring a new approach to rhythm. His unique approach has resulted in Pezhham being termed one of the most distinguished musicians of his generation.

In addition to Tombak and Daf, he is knowledgeable about Setar, Tanbour and Oud. and has studied other percussion instruments including: Indian Tabla with the guidance of Ostad Zakir Hussain, kanjira and gatam. From 2001-2007 Pezhham worked professionally with the renowned vocalist, Shahram Nazeri where he traveled the world performing in some of the worlds most prestigious festivals, events and concert halls. He has performed in Iran, Europe, United States, Australia, and in many notable music festivals including: Festival del Popolo in Italy, Théâtre de la Ville and Théâtre du Soleil in Paris, Fes Festival in Morocco, Sodran Theatre in Sweden, and also performed in Austria, and Finland.

In 2008, he was invited as a guest artist to perform with YoYo Ma as part of his Silk Road project at the Hollywood Bowl. In 2009,he performed in Konya Turkey as part of the Mystic Music Festival. In 2010, he was the featured percussionist of the Masters of Persian Music Tour where he performed in a 10 city United States tour including;Disney Hall in Los Angeles, Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley, Irvine Barclay Theatre in Irvine, Skirball Center in New York City, Sanders Theatre in Boston, Hanna Theatre in Cleveland; Symphony Center in Chicago, Ferst Center for the Arts in Atlanta, Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and the Symphony Center in Chicago.

In 2014 he became a Global Music Director of San Francisco World Music Festival for Iran. In 2015 and 2016 Touring with Ostad Hossein Alizadeh in the USA. In 2016 and 2017 Performing at the 12th and 13th Pan Asian Music Festival as a solo artist from Iran. Pezhham has toured, performed and recorded with some of the masters in Persian music including Shahram Nazeri, Hossein Alizadeh, Aliakbar Moradi, Saeid Farajpouri, Hosein Omoumi and Masoud Shoari.

Today, Pezhham resides in San Francisco California where he teaches private lessons in tombak, daf and setar. He is working on different productions and projects, gives lectures and demonstrations in Persian music and performances, and directing his production company called Akhavass Productions.

Shahin Shahbazi is an award-winning Iranian composer, musician and poet. He is mostly renowned for his mastery of the tar and setar and his composition of the complete Radif works of maestro Ali Akbar Shahnazi with his group Nafir ensemble.

Shahin Shahbazi was born in Tehran and became the apprentice of Ostad Dariush Talai at an early age. Later he learned and worked with some of the most famous masters of Iranian music like Mohammad-Reza Lotfi, Manouchehr Sahbaei, Hossein Dehlavi, Farhad Fakhredini and Houshang Zarif.[2]

In 2002 he founded the Nafir Ensemble. His most famous composition with Nafir ensemble is the recording of Shahnazi’s complete Radif work. This work is outstanding as it was the first time that a composer was capable to rewrite Shahnazi’s Radif work for all traditional Iranian instruments. Furthermore, Nafir ensemble pioneered by becoming the first Iranian Radif orchestra.[3]

Together with Nafir ensemble Shahbazi performed many concerts, most notably during the UNESCO declared Rumi year in 2007 at the official celebrations in Konya and highly anticipated concerts at Irans most famous concerts hall, the Vahdat Hall.[4]

Mostafa Akhavass is a Persian master artist in the forms of traditional crafts such as gilding ”tazheeb” (decorative illustration and inscriptions), calligraphy, Persian enameling “minakari”, ceramic, and Persian miniature painting.

With over forty years of professional experience, Akhavass is widely recognized for his unique and innovative techniques, which incorporate his own refined visual, and conceptual vocabulary with his traditional crafts.

He has been a professor of art at several universities in Iran, most recently at the University of Applied Science and Technology (UAST) since 2010, Alzahra University in 2007 and etc.

He was awarded with an Honorary Doctorate by the Iranian Ministry of Art, and he is the winner of the 2014 Asia’s Living Treasures Award. Mostafa Akhavass’s artwork can be found in a myriad of public, private art collections, and museums of art in Iran and abroad, and has appeared in numerous exhibitions worldwide. He currently lives and works in Tehran, Iran and San Francisco, California, USA.
